January 2024

Happy Sunday folks! I’ve got a few songs that I have been loving lately and wanted to share. A mix of a few different sounds, but all of them have sparked something in me lately. Hope you find something you like in them too.

Ducks Ltd. – “Tank Full of Gasoline”

An absolute bullseye by this Toronto based duo on their band name. Does it get any more CanCon than that little word play title? Maybe I’m overselling it, but I don’t care. Something about these guys really hit me. It has that UK power pop feel to it that just gets you bopping along no matter what. I was dancing to it in the kitchen just moments ago, really throwing my arms around like a buffoon. And while it gets me grooving like I only would in the comfort of my own home, I also really relate lately to the strain of being here when it feels like things around us are barely holding on.

Bombay Bicycle Club – “Just A Little More Time”

A favourite of mine from my days of scouring YouTube for random bands I had never heard of. Speaking of band names, I think this is the one most people reference when they are making up fake indie bands (A couple off the top of my head: Kabul Kite Orchestra or Prague Paper Crane Collective). I really loved the albums I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose and A Different Kind Of Fix, but then there were a few albums following that didn’t interest me. This album, My Big Day, has something different that I like again. This song starts off with this sort of Menahan Street Band style track that I love the feel of.

Mariel Buckley – “Neon Blue”

I am new to Mariel’s music, but it feels like I’ve known her my whole life. Maybe it’s because she’s from Calgary that she seems familiar to me, or maybe its the honestly in her voice that hooks me in. Either way, I am a fan. A heavy sprinkle of synth and steel guitar will always get me too. Mariel is opening up for The Rural Alberta Advantage in Saskatoon at the end of February, so get your tickets for that ASAP.

Waxahatchee – “Right Back To It (Ft. MJ Lenderman)”

I’ve written about Waxahatchee before. I loved her last album and this song just keeps it rolling. It’s easy listening music for a Sunday at home with the sun shining in the windows or a warm summer evening stroll. Katie and MJ’s voices blend together beautifully giving the song a nice warmth. You know I’m a sucker for a nice harmony. Looking forward to the rest of this album.

Madi Diaz & Kacey Musgraves – “Don’t Do Me Good”

My guilty pleasure song at the moment. Two beautiful voices singing a very sing-along-able slow pop country song. Either turn it up in the car and belt it out in the highest pitched voice you’ve got, or turn down the lights and just have a nice little cry. This one makes me feel heavy in my chest. When Kacey cuts in for the second verse…hoofta. WHAT HAVE I BECOME?!
